Shaping up the young mind
The Management of Midland Group of Companies entered into the field of education.
It took over the assets of Rainbow International School, Kampala from the International Finance Corporation, a private
lending arm of the World Bank.
Primarily a day school, Rainbow offers a full time boarding facility for a small number of children aged 7 and above.
The school is mixed ability, mixed sex and very multicultural with at present 48 different nationalities represented,
all contributing to a distinctive vibrant atmosphere. Children are generally placed in the class corresponding to their
age; so differentiated teaching is applied extensively in response to the mixed nature and background of students.
Classes are kept fairly small with a maximum class size of 24 in Primary and 26 in Secondary. There are 45 teachers
and 14 teaching assistants on the staff from a wide international background, with approximately one third being
expatriate staff.
The educational management structure consists of a secondary head teacher, a primary head teacher,
and 3 heads of Section within each of the primary and secondary schools. All teaching is in English and follows the guidelines
of the British National Curriculum. SAT tests were introduced in 2000 and were externally marked for the first time in 2001
following the school's registration with the DFES (Department for Education and Skills) in the UK
From the outset the objective of Rainbow has been to offer affordable high quality education so vital in a developing country
where 50% of the 22 million population are under 18.
Rainbow offers full time boarding facilities for students aged 7 and above. The Rainbow boarding house is located in Kansanga
and school transport takes the boarders to and from school each day. The students are kept constantly busy! The evening
programme consists of compulsory prep time and recreational periods where children are encouraged to develop an interest
or skill. Weekend trips and activities are also organized.
